Production[]
Background[]
Capital Collision is an annual professional wrestling event produced by New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). Since its inception, it is held annually at Washington, D.C.'s Entertainment and Sports Arena. The inaugural Capital Collision took place on May 14, 2022. The second Capital Collision took place on April 15, 2023, thus establishing Capital Collision as an annual event. On April 12, 2024, it was announced that the third Capital Collision would take place on August 30, 2024. On July 26, the partial match card was announced. On August 1, it was announced that Mercedes Mone would make her return to NJPW after a year following her match against Willow Nightingale at Resurgence.
Storylines[]
Capital Collision (2024) featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds and storylines. Wrestlers portrayed villains, heroes, or less distinguishable characters in the scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.

Gabe Kidd, who defended the Strong Openweight Championship against Lio Rush
The event featured Gabe Kidd defending the Strong Openweight Championship against Lio Rush. At Fantastica Mania USA, Lio Rush challenged Gabe Kidd for the Strong Openweight Championship, with Rush describing his Blackheart persona as the physical manifestations of Rush’s inner demons; with Kidd issuing the challenge claiming that ‘I’m all your demons right here’ when issuing his challenge.
The event also saw Dirty Work (Fred Rosser and Tom Lawlor) taking on the West Coast Wrecking Crew (Jorel Nelson and Royce Isaacs). Since the summer of 2023, Team Filthy started to feel frustrated with lack of opportunities and touring in New Japan. After Lonestar Shootout, a frustrated West Coast Wrecking Crew, fresh off their Strong Openweight Tag Team Championship title loss to El Phantasmo and Hikuleo, confronted Lawlor. They took issue with Lawlor's loss to rival, Fred Rosser, and that he shook his hand afterwards. When Team Filthy lost at the Battle in the Valley on January 13, 2024, against Rosser, Shota Umino, and Jacob Fatu, Nelson and Isaacs were incensed that Lawlor once again shook Rosser's hand after the match. They left Lawlor to "figure it out" and decide to be with them or Rosser. On April 12, at Windy City Riot, the WCWC, Lawlor and Fred Rosser failed to win the Strong Openweight Tag Team Championships in a four corners tag team after a highly miscommunication between both teams. After the match, a bitter and frustrated Nelson and Isaacs attacked Rosser and Lawlor, cutting part of Lawlor's hair and feding it to Rosser, thus disbanding Team Filthy. This led Rosser and Lawlor challenging the West Coast Wrecking Crew, which they accepted.

Mercedes Moné, who defended the Strong Women's Championship against Momo Watanabe
On August 15, in Stardom, following a match in the 5★Star GP, Momo Watanabe announced that she wanted to wrestle in America, with the pressure on Watanabe to bring a title to her faction, Watanabe declared that if H.A.T.E leader Natsuko Tora held the World of Stardom Championship, she would then challenge Mercedes Moné to a match for the Strong Women's Championship, which NJPW later announced.
The event also saw TMDK (Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste) defending the Strong Openweight Tag Team Championship against CMLL's Hechicero and Virus. Hechicero and Virus previously challenged TMDK for the Strong Openweight Tag Team Championships in a video package; this led the match to be made official on August 5.
