Pro Wrestling SEM (プロレスリング・セム Puroresuringu Semu) was the developmental branch of Pro Wrestling NOAH founded by Mitsuharu Misawa, being its junior affiliate of NOAH with the name coming from the biblical figure Shem, the eldest son of NOAH. The branch was officially announced in January 2006, and held its first show on November 11, 2006. In addition to NOAH wrestlers, wrestlers from promotions such as Big Japan Pro Wrestling (BJW), Dragon Gate (DG), DDT Pro-Wrestling (DDT), Diamond Ring, New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) and Ring of Honor (ROH) have also taken part in SEM's shows.
The events are held at Tokyo's Differ Ariake Arena. Similar to New Japan Pro Wrestling's "Young Lions" system, SEM functioned as a training facility for rookies, with Naomichi Marufuji and KENTA acting as trainers. Noah rookies Akihiko Ito, Atsushi Aoki, Genba Hirayanagi and Ippei Ota have made their official debuts at SEM's shows. SEM stopped promoting events since 2015.
History[]
In January 2006, Pro Wrestling NOAH Board of Directors member Ryu Nakata proposed the idea of holding shows just for wrestler who were making their debut for the promotion, with four wrestlers who ended their training in December 2005 would also take part of the event. Noah's President Mitsuharu Misawa inspiration for the venture came from the German Westside Xtreme Wrestling promotion, where he wrestled in March 2005. The presentation and close proximity of the fans to the ring impressed Misawa enough to recreate them, thus matches in Sem take place on a pink ring mat and the audience seats are limited to a few hundred, so that all fans can sit close to the ring. Naomichi Marufuji and KENTA headed as coaches for the rookie competitors.
Since 2006, the number of wrestlers that took part of the shows had gradually decrease and the concept of giving a chance to rookies with a limit number of wrestlers started to end. As part of NOAH's working relationship with AAA, the two promotions co-promoted a Pro Wrestling SEM event called Triple SEM on September 9, 2007. Despite another two shows being co-promoted with DDT Pro-Wrestling (DDT) and Diamond Ring in 2008, the four original wrestlers that debut in the promotion that were Akihiko Ito, Atsushi Aoki and Ippei Ota eventually left and the number of promotiong shows dropped in 2011, a new rookie Hitoshi Kumano was supposed to debut at for Pro Wrestling SEM, but debut in Noah, leading in 2015 the brand ceasing its operations due to NOAH's bad reputation following the Yakuza crime scandal that promotion had in 2012 and the promotion's lack of funds to continue to host events.
