In March, Umino took part in the 2023 New Japan Cup, being eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual finalist David Finlay. During the tournament, on March 15, Umino picked up a major win over reigning NJPW World Television Champion Zack Sabre Jr., eliminating him in the second round. This earned him a title match on April 8 at Sakura Genesis, where Umino failed to win the title. On May 3 at Wrestling Dontaku, Umino challenged Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tomohiro Ishii to a title match for the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship, with one of his partners being the returning Jon Moxley. On May 28, Umino revealed Moxley's Blackpool Combat Club stablemate Claudio Castagnoli as the mysterious partner. On June 4, at Dominion 6.4 in Osaka-jo Hall, Umino, Moxley and Castagnoli unsuccessfully challenged Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tomohiro Ishii for the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship. His quick ascension through the ranks of NJPW, led to the promotion announcing the formation of the Reiwa Three Musketeers, on June 30, composing of Umino, Ren Narita and Yota Tsuji, with the distinction going back to 1988, when Masahiro Chono, Shinya Hashimoto and Keiji Mutoh were named the original Three Musketeers during an excursion together in Puerto Rico and later in 2004 to Hiroshi Tanahashi, Shinsuke Nakamura and Katsuyori Shibata as the New Three Musketeers, with each becoming indelible figures in NJPW's history. Afterwards, Umino was asked by Tama Tonga, who helped him fend off the House of Torture, to challenge for the NEVER Openweight Championship, before Umino declared himself as the "new ace" of the new generation. On February 23 at The New Beginning in Sapporo, Umino unsucessfully challenged EVIL for the NEVER Openweight Championship.
The following day, a pre-taped vignette was displayed, where Jack Perry targeted Umino, after he had previously been attacked by him on January 13, at Battle in the Valley, with Umino accepting his challenge to a match. On March 6, Umino was eliminated from the 2024 New Japan Cup by Perry following the interference from House of Torture, whom Perry joined. Afterwards, Umino began campaigning for a rematch against him, which NJPW made official on March 21. On April 12 at Windy City Riot, Umino defeated Perry. After the match, both opponents shook hands and embraced, ending their feud. After having defeated Zack Sabre Jr., during the 2024 G1 Climax, on October 14 at King of Pro-Wrestling, Umino challenged him to a title match for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, after Sabre won the title, alongside Shingo Takagi, with Sabre stating that they would all receive their title matches. The following day, following a draw, it was decided that Umino would receive his title match, after Sabre defended the title against SANADA and Takagi. After Sabre defended his title against SANADA, the latter faced Umino in a match on November 4 at Power Struggle, which he won. Later that night, Umino approached Sabre after his title defense against Takagi, challenging for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, shaking his hand after his acceptance. Afterwards, Sabre was attacked by Ricochet, before Umino chased him off, only for Sabre to throw Umino out of the ring, leading Umino to lay him out with the Death Rider. This led to a match on February 11 at The New Beginning in Osaka, where Umino was defeated by O-Khan in a Lucha de Apuesta match, forcing Umino to have all his hair shaved off after the match. His declaration that he would be the new Ace for a new era in New Japan began having consequences for Umino. Self determination on the part of Umino was decried by many a wrestler and fan, and made his uphill climb in the rest of 2024 all the harder mentally. It all led to Umino taking a hiatus in the wake of defeat to O-Khan, before returning with a shaved head, a pared back presentation and the beginning of his "second chapter". He got his revenge over O-Khan, eliminating him in the second round of the 2025 New Japan Cup, debuting a new finisher, called the Second Chapter. It was this finishing move that took him to the finals of the tournament, but his planned redemption story had a sour twist, when he fell to David Finlay. Afterwards, Finlay stated to Umino that his "way is the only way", indicating the success Umino could be different. At the backstage interview, Umino was confronted by NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi, who challenged Umino to face him on his Final Road retirement tour, which he accepted. On April 5, at Sakura Genesis, Umino defeated Tanahashi. Later that night, after Hirooki Goto successfully defended the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against David Finlay, he announced plans for his next challenger, challenging Umino to a title match, which he accepted.
