Wrestle Dynasty was a scheduled professional wrestling supershow produced by New Japan Pro Wrestling's American sub-brand New Japan Pro-Wrestling of America (NJoA).[1] The event was scheduled to take place in 2021, at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, United States.[1] This was set to be the first event NJPW promoted independently in the Madison Square Garden.[3]
Production[]
Background[]
On October 21, NJPW chairman Naoki Sugabayashi announced the creation of their American subsidiary named New Japan Pro-Wrestling of America, based in California.[4] NJPW established a plan to expand into the United States and international market, which would include promoting events at the Madison Square Garden.[4] Wrestle Dynasty was announced on February 9, 2020, during The New Beginning in Osaka.[1][5][6][3]
The show would mark the first time NJPW presented a show in the Madison Square Garden independently, as opposed to partnering up with an American promotion.[3] NJPW had previously partnered with Ring of Honor (ROH), for the G1 Supercard, which both co-producing show.[3] Pre-sale tickets for the event went on sale on April 8, while the tickets for the general public went on sale on April 10, costing from $20 to $500.[7][8][9] On April 4, it was announced that the pre-sale of the tickets would be postponed until May 13 and May 15, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.[10][11][12] On May 6, NJPW announced that the event would be postponed to the following year, due to the effects of the 2019-20 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but pre-sale registration for tickets would continue, despite the sale of the general sale of the tickets would be suspended.[13] The event was later postponed to an indefinite date due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, before being cancelled all together.
Storylines[]
Wrestle Dynasty featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds and storylines. Wrestlers portray villains, heroes, or less distinguishable characters in the scripted events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.[14]
