The event will air live on CyberAgent's Abema TV online linear television service and Wrestle Universe streaming service. As part of CyberAgent's acquisition of Pro Wrestling Noah (Noah) wrestlers from the promotion will also appear on the show, as well as wrestlers from DDT's Joshi's sub-brand Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling (TJP). The event was originally scheduled to take place solely on June 7, 2020, at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, but the event was canceled in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only to be rescheduled on May 15, with the event, set to take place on June 6 and June 7 on two nights, for the first time in history. At the end of February, DDT began holding shows with no audience and only essential staff present, with all DDT programming being relocated to the DDT TV Show Studio in May.

Taking advantage of the format, three matches — a "Last Man Standing", and a "Yoshihiro Sakai CEO Inauguration Match in Niigata" — were filmed off-site in atypical, cinematic style.

The card will comprise 16 matches which are divided between the two nights. On the first night, the show will be headlined by Konosuke Takeshita facing Yoshihiko, in a Last Man Standing match. Another prominent match scheduled for the show featured Daisuke Sasaki defending the DDT Universal Championship in a three-way hardcore match against Isami Kodaka and Shunma Katsumata. On the second night, the show will be headlined by Masato Tanaka defending the KO-D Openweight Championship against the holder of the Saitama Super Arena Sword Tetsuya Endo. The second night also featured three other title matches with Shinya Aoki defending the DDT Extreme Division Championship against Yukio Naya in a Celebration! Release Restriction Rules match, Danshoku Dieno defending the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship against Makoto Oishi and Nautilus (Naomi Yoshimura and Yuki Ueno) defending the KO-D Tag Team Championship against Strong Hearts (El Lindaman and T-Hawk).

Wrestle Peter Pan 2020 received mostly positive reactions from fans and critics. While it was noted that the event suffered from the absence of a live audience, most felt that DDT exceeded expectations. The Last Man Standing match was singled out as a highlight due to its uniqueness and over-the-top tone, and their comedy style, which was a direct parody of the WWE style of cinematic wrestling, while the KO-D Openweight Championship match was also praised due to the in-ring action of both performers and for being a straight-up match.

Wrestle Peter Pan was officially announced on July 15, 2019, during a match between DDT's President Sanshiro Takagi and Super Sasadango Machine in the previous Wrestle Peter Pan, in which the event would take place at the Super Saitama Arena on June 7, 2020. Takagi later commented on his decision to hold the event at the Super Saitama Arena, stating that the plan to run the event at the venue, came after the promotion didn't manage to completely sell the venue in two different events in 2015 and 2017, which were attended by 6,500 and 10,702 spectators, respectively, as well the promotion's financial growth, after selling out their events in the Ryogoku Kokugikan and their monthly events at Korakuen Hall. On January 3, 2020, it was announced that Japanese comedian Kurochan would take part in the event. On January 26, 2020, at Sweet Dreams, DDT announced the annual Right to Challenge Anytime, Anywhere, with the addition of a new contract the Saitama Super Arena Sword, in which, the holder of the sword would get an opportunity for KO-D Openweight Championship at the event.

On February 23, at Into The Fight, it was announced that Kenny Omega would be appearing at the event, marking his first appearance for the promotion since November 3, 2019. On March 18, it announced that Yoshiaki Yatsu would make his return to DDT, since June 2, 2019, when he was forced to pull out of his DDT commitments when his right foot was amputated because of pre-existing problems with diabetes.

The event was originally to take place at the Super Saitama Arena in Saitama solely on June 7, 2020. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, other wrestling promotions began to cancel or postpone their shows in an attempt to prevent further spreading of the COVID-19 virus. At the end of February, DDT began holding shows with no audience and only essential staff present. DDT's sister promotion Pro Wrestling Noah began holding shows behind closed doors in an empty TV studio under NOAH TV name, with the shows being streamed in the DDT Universe. This led to all DDT doing the same in May, with all programming being relocated to the DDT TV Show Studio. On April 23, DDT announced that the event would be postponed, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, following Japan's declaration of State of Emergency. Kenny Omega also announced that due to travel restrictions because of the COVID-19, he would be unable to work in the event. Afterwards, the card underwent changes due to issues that arose related to the ongoing pandemic. On May 16, it was announced that the event would be rescheduled to take place on June 6 and June 7, with the event being moved to the DDT TV Show Studio in Tokyo, without an audience and the event would be broadcasted live on AmebaTV and CyberAgent's streaming service Wrestle Universe.

The following month, Endo successfully defended his sword against Royce Chambers, after he cashed in his Right to Challenge Anytime, Anywhere contract. Afterwards, Endo found himself a new challenger for his sword, which was Kazusada Higuchi. On May 2 at DDT TV Show, Endo lost his sword to Higuchi. Seven days later, during a backstage interview, Endo confronted Higuchi, warning that the sword would return to him. Prior to Yukio Sakaguchi's title defense, Kazusada Higuchi had been seen as a possible opponent for his Eruption stablemate Sakaguchi, should he had won the KO-D Openweight Championship.

  +
On May 23, at DDT TV Show, Daisuke Sasaki successfully defended the DDT Universal Championship against Chris Brookes. After the match, Sasaki nominated Shunma Katsumata to be his next challenger for the DDT Universal Championship, after proclaiming that he wanted a hardcore match and Katsumata was the "weakest member of All Out". However, Isami Kodaka returned to DDT, proclaiming himself as the newest challenger, since he had won all of DDT’s main championships, except the DDT Universal Championship. Sasaki accepted Kodaka’s challenge and dismissed Katsumata, leading Katsumata to attack Sasaki and a brawl between the three. This led to DDT's Assistant Producer Hisaya Imabayashi announcing a three-way hardcore match for Peter Pan. On May 30, during an interview, Sasaki was attacked by Katsumata and then raised the DDT Universal Championship over him.

In April, Seigo Tachibana began asking DDT's President Sanshiro Takagi to work for DDT, which Takagi initially agreed to book him for a show, if a video interview he uploaded to his Youtube page reached 1,000 viewers. The goal was met but Tachibana never heard back from Takagi, leading him to interrupt a Q&A session between Takagi and DDT's Assistant Producer Hisaya Imabayashi to get an answer on May 15, which Takagi shifted the responsibility over to Imabayashi. On May 24, at DDT TV Show, Tachibana demanded a match, leading Imabayashi to give him an exhibition match with Hideki Okatani, which ended in a time limit draw. On May 30, Tachibana demanded again to be booked, but Imabayashi refused because he couldn't defeat Okatani. Tachibana threatened him into giving another match until Nobuhiro Shimatani entered the room also demanding to be booked, leading Imabayashi to book a match between the two for the first night of Peter Pan.

Next, it was the celebration of Muscle Sakai's promotion to CEO of Sakai Seiki Co. Ltd. Pokotan was sent to the Sakai Seiki factory in Niigata to have a match against Super Sasadango Machine. Sasadango had to turn down the match over the fear of exposing the factory to COVID-19 and took the opportunity to use Pokotan as free labor. Pokotan was introduced to Yukako Mito and was invited to take a tour of the factory. Mito showed Pokotan around and explained how to polish plastic molds. After polishing molds for hours, Pokotan noticed Mito went missing. Looking around, Pokotan discovered a sign on a room that said "Niigata Joshi Pro Wrestling (#njpw)". Pokotan opened the door and discovered Sasadango training Mito to wrestle cardboard boxes. After Sasadango's secret plan to launch a new professional wrestling company having been exposed, it was decided that Pokotan would serve as Mito's sparring partner in an impromptu match. Mito made quick work of the mascot and performed a "Beautiful Cross Body" to win the match.

The following match, Jun Akiyama and Mizuki Watase faced All Out (Akito and Yuki Iino). In the end, Watase countered a spear from Iino. However, Iino successfully performed a second spear for the win. After the match, Iino kept taunting Akiyama by performing haka poses. Akiyama responded by showing only disdain.

In the next match, Pro Wrestling Noah stable KONGOH (Kenoh, Masa Kitamiya, and Haoh), accompanied by their stablemates Nioh, Manabu Soya, and Yoshiki Inamura faced the team of Sanshiro Takagi, Kazusada Higuchi, and Tomomitsu Matsunaga. Kenoh wanted a clean wrestling match but Takagi introduced his patented plastic fly cases and his customized bicycle, the "Dramatic Dream Cycle", as weapons. Despite Takagi's antics, Haoh caught Matsunaga in the "Tornado Clutch" to get the victory. After the match, Takagi spoke about the different ideologies between DDT and NOAH and they didn’t have to fit together.

Next, Daisuke Sasaki defended the DDT Universal Championship against Isami Kodaka and Shunma Katsumata in a three-way hardcore match. After the use of multiple weapons, including steel chairs, a ladder, and toy blocks, Katsumata fought off Kodaka with the block toy covered baseball bat. Sasaki took Katsumata's toy block covered baseball bat, hit him in the groin, which he followed with the Hurricarrana for his third successful title defense. Following the match, Sasaki sat down on a chair while Kodaka climbed the ladder to speak to him. Afterwards, Kodaka admitted and challenged him to a match for his title. Since Sasaki was tired, he suggested that their next should be in 10 years' time. This led to Kodaka to suggest for their match to be at the following years Olympics. Sasaki then nominated Masahiro Takanashi to be his next challenger.

  +
In the main event of the first night, Konosuke Takeshita faced Yoshihiko in a Last Man Standing match set at an undisclosed cemetery and building in the Tokyo area. Takeshita was first ambushed by Yoshihiko who put him in a figure-four leglock. Takeshita broke free and ran away. He tried to phone Yuki Iino but Yoshihiko knocked the phone off his hand right after Iino answered the call. Takeshita went to hide in a nearby building where he managed to ambush Yoshihiko. They fought on the roof until Takeshita knocked Yoshihiko over the edge. As Takeshita thought he had won, Yoshihiko appeared behind him with its face covered in blood and choked Takeshita with a sleeper hold, but Takeshita managed to escape and grabbed a tank of gasoline. He then poured gasoline over Yoshihiko, but Yoshihiko grabbed the tank in turn and doused Takeshita. Both fought over a lighter until Yoshihiko pulled one of Takeshita's eyeballs out. Takeshita reclaimed it and pushed it back in, visibly with no after-effects. Yoshihiko performed a Canadian destroyer on Takeshita and tried to use the lighter but Takeshita got back up and hit Yoshihiko with a ripcord lariat before setting it ablaze in a giant explosion. Iino finally appeared equipped with baseball bats, but the match was over as Takeshita was the last man standing. They left happy to have won their war against Yoshihiko but after credits rolled, the body of Yoshihiko was shown in a post-credit scene fashion, with its eyes beginning to shine again.

  +
The second night of the event opened with Toru Owashi taking on Antonio Honda in a match remotely produced by Super Sasadango Machine. Before the match started, Sasadango delivered a message in a pre-taped vignette to the participants, saying he made the match a "Chop Up Challenge", with where every chop delivered would amount to a donation of 100¥ in support of medical personnel. The action quickly spilled outside of the ring and into the backstage area which caused DDT's Assistant Producer Hisaya Imabayashi to start the following match. The broadcast would regularly check in on the first match as the event continued.

  +
The second match was a Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling exhibition match featuring Miyu Yamashita, Yuka Sakazaki, and Shoko Nakajima facing Nodoka Tenma, Rika Tatsumi, and Yuki Aino. In the end, Yamashita hit a backspin kick on Aino, followed by the "Magical Magical Girl Splash" from Sazaki for the victory. After the match, a segment showed Owashi and Honda chopping each other in a locker room while eating snacks. Still hungry, Owashi suggested they grab dinner. Referee Shota showed that the chopping counter had reached "313" chops.

  +
On the following match, Shinya Aoki defended the DDT Extreme Division Championship against Yukio Naya. To celebrate the lift on Tokyo's outdoor restrictions, the match was fought under No Countout rules. After both men dragged each other around the hallways of the venue while fighting, they found their way back in the ring, where Aoki countered a backdrop from Naya into a "European Clutch" for the win.
  +
  +
Afterwards, Eruption (Yukio Sakaguchi and Saki Akai) faced Chris Brookes and Maki Itoh. In the end, Akai performed the "Quetzalcoatl", on Brookes as he was trying to come to Ito's rescue. Ito showed the middle finger to Sakaguchi, who then responded by hitting her with a penalty kick for the three count. After the match, Owashi and Honda were shown arriving at the Ebisuko Tavern, an izakaya managed and manned by several DDT wrestlers and located in the Kabukichō district. Still chopping each other, they were greeted by Ken Ohka who refused to let them sit inside due to restrictions because of the COVID-19. He gave them take-outs and they dragged him along with them back to the venue without paying for the meal.

  +
In the fifth match, Danshoku Dino defended the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship against Makoto Oishi. Dino and Oishi tried to their match at the Ochanomizu Dojo. However, Dino forgot to turn off his stove, the referee never turned up. During Oishi's entrance, Dino received a text from Oishi apologizing for being late as he had to tend to his 7-month-old child and promising he was on his way. Because of their limited broadcast time, referee Yukinori Matsui and General Manager Imabayashi were ready to cancel the match but Dino begged them to wait for three minutes. The production changed to a TV drama style and memories of the decade long friendship Dino and Oishi have been sharing played to the tune of Miyuki Nakajima's "Thread" (糸, Ito). As Imabayashi was about to call off the match, the music stopped and Oishi appeared. In his haste, he tripped over the steps leading to the ringside area and fell unconscious to the ground. Referee Matsui went to check on him and deemed him unable to compete thus ruling the match a no contest.

The sixth match featured ASUKA and MAO taking on HARASHIMarufuji (HARASHIMA and Naomichi Marufuji). In the end, ASUKA attempted a moonsault on HARASHIMA, but he countered by getting his knees up, leading Marufuji to hit MAO with a "Tiger King", while HARASHIMA performed the "Somato" on ASUKA to win the match. After the match, HARASHIMA and Marufuji offered handshakes to ASUKA and MAO, but Asuka slapped Marufuji before leaving the ring. HARASHIMA told Marufuji that he wanted them to CIMA and Soma Takao, who were originally supposed to face them.

  +
Next, Owashi, and Honda were now enjoying their take-out meal in the locker room while holding Ohka captive. Kudo the manager of the Ebisuko Tavern, appeared demanding the money he was owed for the meal. Because the bill amounted to 3,100 yen, Kudo agreed to chop Ohka 31 times, bringing the total number of chops to 1,000, leading referee Shota to stop the match, ruling it as a draw.

In the semi-main event, Nautilus (Naomi Yoshimura and Yuki Ueno) defended the KO-D Tag Team Championship against Strong Hearts (T-Hawk and El Lindaman). In the end, Ueno performed the frog splash on Lindaman, followed by the "WR", for the win.

In the main event of the second night, Masato Tanaka defended the KO-D Openweight Championship against Tetsuya Endo. Tanaka threw Endo from a top turnbuckle through a table outside of the ring. Endo blocked a diving splash attempt with his knees. Because Tanaka heavily targeted Endo's legs, Endo was unable to perform his handspring overhead kick. In the end, Endo missed a shooting star press which gave Tanaka the opportunity to perform the "Sliding D", leading Endo to escape the pin attempt by reaching the ropes, which followed by performing a "Package Canadian Destroyer" and a consecutive "Shooting Star Press" to win the KO-D Openweight Championship for the second time. After the match, Endo promised to hold onto the title for them to have a rematch at Saitama Super Arena.

Reception
  +
Thomas Fischbeck in his review of Voices of Wrestling said that "Kongoh vs DDT was fun", and praised the main event, which "sure some will hate as it was part of that cinematic style, although done very ironically". For the whole event, Fischbeck said that "it would be disingenuous to not say this was the "worst" Peter Pan in many years, but that is the situation we're under with empty arena [...] this was pretty good, although truthfully you could probably just watch the top two matches and end up much happier."

  +
Stuart Iversen in his review of Ramblings About Wrestling said "the doors might be locked, but DDT is still going to give us a Peter Pan, and, in a totally original idea", he also added, "that was a very enjoyable show [...] there was any straight-up match [...], but it was a fun, easy watch."

The first night of the event will be headlined by Masato Tanaka defending the KO-D Openweight Championship against the holder of the Saitama Super Arena Sword Tetsuya Endo. Yasu Urano became the inaugural holder of the sword until he lost it to Daisuke Sasaki, who successfully cashed in his Right to Challenge Anytime, Anywhere contract. On February 23, at Into The Fight, Sasaki lost his sword to Akito, before his DAMNATION stablemate Tetsuya Endo defeated Akito to win the sword.

  +
John Dinsdale in his review of Wrestling Steel Chair said the event "was an absolutely mental day of action with a series of explosive matches culminating in the greatest cinematic spectacle to hit wrestling". He also praised the main event of the first night for being "the perfect measure of comedy, horror, and direct parody of the WWE style of cinematic wrestling."

On May 16, Endo teamed with his DAMNATION stablemate Daisuke Sasaki in a winning effort against All Out (Akito and Konosuke Takeshita), with Endo pinning Akito, winning Akito's Right to Challenge Anytime, Anywhere contract in the process. After the match, Endo asked Hisaya Imabayashi if the rules for the Sword and Gauntlets had changed, but Imabayashi confirmed that the rules are the same, leading Endo to call out Higuchi. Afterwards, Endo successfully cashed in his contract against Higuchi, regaining the Saitama Super Arena Sword. Meanwhile, Tanaka defended his KO-D Openweight Championship against MAO, Konosuke Takeshita, and Yukio Sakaguchi. On May 23, Endo and his DAMNATION stablemate Soma Takao faced Tanaka and HARASHIMA in a losing effort. Afterwards, Tanaka successfully defended the KO-D Openweight Championship against Shinya Aoki, who had cashed in his Right to Challenge Anytime, Anywhere contract. Following the match, Hisaya Imabayashi announced that Endo and Tanaka would face each other for the KO-D Openweight Championship in the main event of the second night of the event.

Latest revision as of 19:14, 18 June 2021

Wrestle Peter Pan (2020) is a featured article.

Wrestle Peter Pan 2020 was a two-day professional wrestling event promoted by DDT Pro-Wrestling (DDT). The two shows took place on June 6 and 7, 2020, at the DDT TV Show Studio in Tokyo, Japan. This was the twelfth Peter Pan and the second promoted under the Wrestle Peter Pan name, which is DDT's biggest annual event and has been called "the largest wrestling show in the Japanese independent circuit". This was the first time that the Wrestle Peter Pan was held on two nights, instead of taking place solely on one night.

The event aired live on CyberAgent's Abema TV online linear television service and Wrestle Universe streaming service. As part of CyberAgent's acquisition of Pro Wrestling Noah (Noah) wrestlers from the promotion also appeared on the show, as well as wrestlers from DDT's Joshi's sub-brand Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling (TJP).

The card comprised 16 matches which were divided between the two nights. On the first night, the show was headlined by Konosuke Takeshita facing Yoshihiko, in a Last Man Standing match. Another prominent match scheduled for the show featured Daisuke Sasaki defending the DDT Universal Championship in a three-way hardcore match against Isami Kodaka and Shunma Katsumata. On the second night, the show was headlined by Masato Tanaka defending the KO-D Openweight Championship against the holder of the Saitama Super Arena Sword Tetsuya Endo. The second night also featured three other title matches with Shinya Aoki defending the DDT Extreme Division Championship against Yukio Naya in a Celebration! Release Restriction Rules match, Danshoku Dino defending the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship against Makoto Oishi and Nautilus (Naomi Yoshimura and Yuki Ueno) defending the KO-D Tag Team Championship against Strong Hearts (El Lindaman and T-Hawk).

Production[]

Background[]

Since 2009, DDT began annually producing shows in the Ryōgoku Kokugikan held in the summer, following the promotions financial success of the first event. This led to the event, becoming DDT's premier annual event and the biggest event in the independent circuit of Japanese wrestling. Since 2019, the event was renamed "Wrestle Peter Pan", the Peter Pan shows have been broadcast on pay-per-view (PPV).

Takagi2010

Sanshiro Takagi, founder and President of the promotion

Takagi had originally considered holding a show at the Saitama Super Arena for the 2012 Peter Pan, but he was forced to abandon his plans, after founding out that the arena was already booked out for the entire year, leading him to hold the show in the Nippon Budokan instead.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic[]

KennyOmega

Kenny Omega, who was originally supposed to take part in the event

Kenny Omega also announced that due to travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he would be unable to work in the event.

Storylines[]

The event comprised a total of sixteen matches divided across the two nights. The Wrestle Peter Pan 2020 event featured nine professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds and storylines. Wrestlers portrayed villains, heroes, or less distinguishable characters in the scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.

Main event matches[]

Konosuke Takeshita

Konosuke Takeshita, who faced Yoshihiko, in a Last Man Standing match in the main event of the first night of Peter Pan

SasadangoPP

Super Sasadango Machine, who sent Pokotan to the Sakai Seiki factory in Niigata

Daisuke Sasaki, who successfully defended the DDT Universal Championship against Isami Kodaka and Shunma Katsumata in a three-way hardcore match

Next, Daisuke Sasaki defended the DDT Universal Championship against Isami Kodaka and Shunma Katsumata in a three-way hardcore match.

LastmanPP

Konosuke Takeshita after defeating Yoshihiko in their Last Man Standing match

Toru Owashi

Toru Owashi, who faced Antonio Honda in the Falls Count Anywhere – Chop Up Challenge match

Aokishinya l

Shinya Aoki, who successfully defended the DDT Extreme Division Championship against Yukio Naya

Oishi

Makoto Oishi, who faced Danshoku Dino for the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship in a no contest

MAO

MAO, who teamed with ASUKA in a losing effort against HARASHIMarufuji (HARASHIMA and Naomichi Marufuji)

EndoKO-D2

Tetsuya Endo, celebrating his victory with his DAMNATION stablemates Soma Takao, Mad Paulie, and Daisuke Sasaki

Reception[]

Thomas Fischbeck in his review of Voices of Wrestling said that "Kongoh vs DDT was fun", and praised the main event, which "sure some will hate as it was part of that cinematic style, although done very ironically". For the whole event, Fischbeck said that "it would be disingenuous to not say this was the "worst" Peter Pan in many years, but that is the situation we're under with empty arena [...] this was pretty good, although truthfully you could probably just watch the top two matches and end up much happier."
